My love affair with perfume began waaay back. My Grandmother A wore Chanel No. 5 exclusively and my Grandmother B wore Emeraude...from the moment I realized that the stuff in the bottle smelled good, I couldn't get enough. Grandmother A even amassed the most beautiful antique perfume bottle collection I have ever seen.
In my hometown, it wasn't easy to get the "big city" scents, so we settled for Windsong, Shalimar, Rive Guache, Fabrege's Woodhue, Tabu and Charlie. As soon as I left for college I made it my mission to move up the list...White Shoulders, Joy by Jean Paton and Youth Dew by Estee Lauder. Once I smelled Youth Dew, I was hooked for the next three decades.
As I aged, I exchanged Youth Dew for Estee Lauder's Beautiful and stayed with it for years. As a matter of fact, once someone came up to me and said, "Were you at the church this morning?" As a matter of fact I was. "Yes, why?" I inquired. "I went in the kitchen," she continued, " and it smelled like you." Now I'm not sure if she was referring to my Beautiful or the bacon that the deacons cooked for the men's Saturday breakfast, but I knew I had OD'd on the scent that particular morning.
Payday was Friday and I always buy myself a little treat on payday. Maybe a Snappy Turtle at Bop's or a new magazine at WM, but this time, I went all out. Estee Lauder has reintroduced the 1950's blue bottled spray Youth Dew and guess what I have on right now? (Beside the ratty housecoat, I mean....) Yes! Youth Dew from my college days! It's wonderful and I am so happy I went a little over the top and purchased it. What great memories it brings back. What scents do you like and do you wear? I'd like to hear! Anyone remember Ambush (for girls) & Canoe (for the guys)?!

I was just discussing this post with my friend, Miss Anonymous. She informed me that Youth Dew made her head hurt and made her nauseous...guess I won't be wearing it when we go on our annual after Christmas shopping spree. :( The things you learn about old friends!) Julie, I DO remember Jungle Gardenia. It was not one of my favorites....but I read it was Elizabeth Taylor's favorite.
My 1st favorite was Primos and Sunflower--by Elizabeth Arden. Now I can hardly stand the smell of either of them on me. Now my favorite is Clinique Happy. ---And several other favorites.
I love Beautiful. Joy was my Mom's favorite of all time but I have never bought any. MMM might be asking for a bottle for Christmas:) The one I am hooked on now is Vera Wang:)
What about Escape by Calvin Klein? It is great! Have you noticed that sometimes a scent doesn't smell the same on two people? I also like Happy and I'm going to have to "smell" the Vera Wang.
hi angela---my mother wore youth dew most of the time--When I smell it--i always think of her---funny thing though--the first perfumes I ever wore were Emeraude and Chanel no 5 --from my mom's stuff--cause she didn't wear them as much and said i could use them!

Estee Lauder's Youth Dew brings back quite a few memories! I was a Sophomore at Ole Miss in 1980. Being the diva that I am, I decided to make Youth Dew my "signature" fragrance. Somehow, I thought the world would remember me by my choice of this classy fragrance. I was on a date at the Alpha Tau Omega house with a really cute guy! I was thrilled when he commented on my perfume...well, that is until he told me it reminded him of his grandmother!!! To say the least, when I returned to my dorm, I dumped the Youth Dew in the trash can. The next day, I headed straight to Nielson's on the Square in Oxford to purchase Chanel's Crystalle. I've never worn Youth Dew again!! :)
My journey with fragrances continues...
I've been quite a fan of Vera Wang for years!! But in the spirit of branching out, I fell in love with the musky, floral scent of Narcisso Rodriquez. That is until I read that he dressed Michelle Obama on Inauguration Day...sorry Democrats. Alas, I moved on to a lovely, sweet fragrance by Nanette Lepore. It is a wonderful scent for most any occasion. Then, I recently read a review in a major fashion magazine that described this perfume as smelling like "carnival cotton candy"!! So, here I am wearing nothing but the smell of the tuna sandwich that I had for supper. I guess I'll go shopping tomorrow.
Oh, nymuss, you truly have journeyed here and there...smelling great all along the way! You are much more of a little dare devil than I remembered your being!!
