Welcome!

I am glad you chose to visit! My blog is a compilation of the many hats I find myself wearing. On any given day I may be an encourager, an instructor, or just a lady who is venting. You, dear reader, will probably identify with my triumphs and my tribulations! These snapshots fit into my Life Scrapbook I have named A. McInnis Artworks. I hope you will find something worth your while.

Don't Let the Sun Set On Your Anger...

It is true that you don't know how much you appreciate something until it's gone. That's the case with rain! We have been without rain for weeks now. Summer in the south has been humid and dry at the same time. And did I mention, HOT?

For two days in a row, we suddenly received super showers. They weren't prolonged periods of rain, but what a blessing of refreshing they were.

Have you ever had periods in your life like this? The problems seem like they will never end? You are "parched" and need just a cup of water. (Sometimes, I'd even settle for a drop.) That's where I found myself not too long ago. I wanted to share this "thorn in the flesh" in the hope that maybe it would be encouraging to you in some small way.

God's Word is ALWAYS correct. We can dodge it, try to hide from it, deny it, but in the end, if you know anything about God's Word, you know it's right. Case in point here. Several years ago, I got my feelings hurt...not only at the work place but also at church. People I thought were my friends, weren't. People I trusted, disappointed me. People I loved deserted me when I needed them most.

Now, if you are a friend, don't try to decide if you were one of them. That's not the point here. Just stay with me and let me get this out there. I have been a Christian for over 60 years, I know the Bible is clear about how to handle situations like this. You are to go to that person who has offended and speak eyeball to eyeball. You are to try and clear the problem up before it becomes a festering sore. You are NOT to let the sun go down while still being angry. You are to go in love and try to restore peace....even if it is NOT your fault. You are not to pout or try to get people on your side. That is called dissension and it is a destroyer.

And that is exactly what I did....I pouted, I misspoke, I got so angry that I dreaded going to work and worse, I didn't want to go to church. Did my actions make things better for me..or for anyone? Of course not. I felt as though I was walking in a desert. I needed just a drop of water. I needed a Friend.
(Read Ephesians 4.)

Then it happened. I went back to church. And one day, I went back to Sunday School. And the next thing I knew I felt refreshed. I felt pardoned. I felt forgiven. My prayer life, while not perfect, has been a Godsend. I have had a paradigm shift.  The way I face the day is completely different. I have no desire to relive the events that shattered my confidence and my friendships, except to help someone out there who might be struggling in this area. Do I care what you think of me as I write this? Certainly, but not in the way you might imagine. I was given the thirst quenching drink of forgiveness...maybe not from man but more importantly from our Heavenly Father. I want you to feel that forgiveness also.

People are people. They are sinners. Some have accepted that Jesus died for their sins and are saved from those sins. Some have not yet accepted Him. Some will not. But that's not my call. All I can do is to use the Bible as my "playbook". Read and study it and find the answers to problems that seem to be swirling all around. Whether there is or isn't a definite answer spelled out...give it to God. He knows best. He is my Savior and Friend...even when nobody else provides rain (provision)...He Will. He answers prayer...I believe it, I have seen it, I am a witness to you...He answers prayer.

A forgiven friend,

A Look At Home

This week, two incidents have given me pause to examine some feelings. First, I have reconnected with some old friends from Grenada over the past few months and have enjoyed exchanging pictures of days gone by with them. Second, I received a decorating book that I ordered with the recommendation of another blogger. I knew I was wrong when I ordered the darn thing...too many pages were filled with things I could never have. I once had a pastor who said he threw away all the catalogs that came to his house. That they just set in motion a yearning for more and more things. How true.

As I mentally put the book aside, (still in my pajamas) I grabbed my camera and out the door I went.
I quietly absorbed the country stillness, the birds at the feeder, the gentleness of the breeze. I photographed "our land" from different angles.

This photo is the road "home". Every time I turn onto it, I feel a peace come over me. It's not grand...just a country road, but it signals that I can leave turmoil behind, if only for a while.

When I sit on my back porch, these pastures are my breathing space. Nothing fancy, just a few horses and some donkeys, a few rolling hills. But when I hear the hooves beat, and see them gallop toward their feeding area at dusk, it just can't be beat.

I enjoy sitting on my back porch when it rains and watching my rain chain flow.

My birds that come to my feeders never disappoint me.

...and those that choose to nest with us every year are like loyal friends.
My friends are a lot like my favorite birds...there's the chickadee who always flits around, is friendly, kind,  shares with others and ALWAYS gives me birdseed as one of my Christmas presents! There are two cardinal friends. They are loyal, always present, and bring beauty and calm whenever they are around. Then there's my mockingbird. She is not afraid to tell me the unvarnished truth...she frequently states, "Stop the Madness!" and pulls me back when I overdo (..she also eats Mexican with me because my husband won't!) Now that's true friendship. My bluebird friend and I can be away from each other for many weeks, but when we get together, we pick right back up where we left off.

Below is my feeble attempt at gardening. I bought the tomato plant that was the largest and already had a tomato on it....lol.  My flowers really show off sometime and wither hideously other times. But I don't give up...every year I make space for some sunny little faces that give me immense pleasure when they decide to cooperate!

My point in this diatribe is that I really cherish my family, friends (both old and new)  and surroundings. I am satisfied..(if I had a workroom and a dining room, I'd be 100% satisfied). I don't love "things" like I used to. Instead, I love people and places that give me fond memories. I would rather somebody else be pleased or delighted than experience those feelings myself. No, I am trying to send out a "humble pie" vibe. It's just the plain truth.

I don't have to have a showroom house, inside or out. I used to think I did but not anymore. I consciously choose a home with integrity...furnishings with comfort...objects that have sweet memories and people with character and loyalty over showroom any day!

Blessings to each of you,

Angela

Remembrance Potholders

What a week it has been! I've had doctor visit after doctor visit. Let me just say, those visits have finally done it...scared me into being serious about my health. I may go down, but it won't be with a mouthful of Little Debbie's. It's probably just as well Twinkies left the market when they did.

Also, I've decided I am a procrastinator of the worst kind! I've known about the following project since May, and even though I still have a week left before they are due, I am just now finishing them...bad, bad girl!

My mother was one of those kind of cooks that could look in the pantry and in 30 minutes have a great meal on the table. Me? NOT so...everything she cooked was delicious and in her honor, I decided to make pot holder keepsakes for our family for Christmas this year.

Since only two or three members of the family read my blog, I won't be giving away the surprise to many! And a word of caution!!! This is a time consuming project...not expensive, but it IS a labor of love. So if any family members are reading this and I know who you are :) , when you open yours at our family Christmas, you can really make a big deal of it...haha...just kidding...I think.

I originally saw this idea in Country Living magazine and then saw where a lady would do this for you for $38. What?! Yes, Virginia, it's worth it.

The first thing you must do is select a recipe in your chosen person's handwriting and copy it so that you have at least three copies on a sheet of copy paper. This is if you want to make more than one.
You will eventually be making a copy of that recipe onto cloth
and then attaching the cloth recipe to a potholder.
The potholder prototype was green, but the ones I did for family were black.
They match a monogrammed dishtowel I also made for said family.
Step One: Gather your materials.
Buy your potholders. Also buy smooth material on which to print your chosen recipe.
I used khaki broadcloth.
The other materials are:  fusible Pellon or WonderUnder, an iron, a printer, and a sewing machine.
Some cute ribbon and a button are optional.
Step Two: cut two pieces of fusible web as wide as regular printer paper and about 1 inch high.
Step Three: Press your broadcloth so it has no wrinkles..at all.
Then sandwich the fusible web strips between the cloth and the computer paper at the top and bottom.
Press lightly until the paper is bonded to the cloth and it all lies flat.
Cut out the cloth using the paper as your pattern.
This is the paper and cloth after bonding but before being cutting out.
Step Four: This is how my printer accepts paper, so I carefully slipped the paper with the cloth attached into the printer and copied the recipes onto the cloth.
I was able to get three of my mother's recipes for Poppy seed Chicken onto the paper sized cloth.
Now, this is dicey. Once I used double sided tape rather than the fusible web and it didn't work so well,
 thus, the fusible web.
However,  REMEMBER this:
When placing your recipes to be printed on the original paper, Skip down about an inch on the page to print...thus you will avoid having the bonded part of the paper stick to the back of the recipe.
Step Five: Cut out the cloth recipe. Try to do this smoothly and clip all little threads as you go.
Attach the cloth recipe to the potholder by cutting a piece of fusible web the size of the recipe and
ironing the recipe to the front of the potholder.
As you can see, the resulting copied recipe is clear and looks very good!
Step 6: With my Brother SE 400 machine, I finished the edges of the cloth recipe with an overcast stitch.
This could be done by hand or a little ribbon trim or rickrack could be ironed on around the recipe.
Step 7: I added a bow and a button at the top.
The bow color matches the monogrammed initial on the monogrammed dish towels.

I have no idea if the potholders will hold up to washing,
but these aren't for everyday use.
These are a remembrance of my mother and her skills in the kitchen
and the love with which she prepared our food for so many years.

Touching Base

My poor neglected blog! So much going on that I can't get it all done! I have been getting ready for the holiday season at Dwellings,( the little shop my son, daughter in law and I own.) Still recovering from knee surgeries and I have been very limited in what I can do, but I am trying to think positively and charge onward!

I really wanted to touch base with you and say hello and let you in on a new website that you may or may not have used...www.houzz.com. It's a collection of thousands of designs, by room, for you to just sit and drool over! You know how much I LOVE Pinterest and I'll always enjoy it, but this is a new avenue to peruse.

Also, I'm not sure if I've mentioned this, but for my friends who might lose power in the next few days, I'd like to remind you to "solar up" your solar lights from outdoors and bring them inside during the night if you need additional power. The next morning, put them back outside (if it's not raining) and power them again.
Great tip that I gleaned from somewhere...so many tips, so little mind left.

Election day is less than 200 hours away, please, do NOT forget to vote!

"Talk To You Soon!"

Before signing off for a few days (due to knee surgery) I wanted to touch base. Sitting here listening to the rain I thought how ironic is it that 7 years ago today another hurricane just about took out the coast of our little state and today...well, here we go again. We were without power for 5 days..and it was awful. I can't imagine how terrible it was for those who were without power for weeks, without food and water and who lost everything they had. Please, add Mississippi and Louisiana to your prayers. While Isaac wasn't nearly as devastating as Katrina to most, it is still devastating to many.

Just a few more odds and ends until we chat again...
I have worked on my collection of pine needle baskets this summer. I found these two miniature ones this year and have enjoyed them so much. You don't just find these baskets around any corner and I felt like I struck gold with them! I wonder if anyone else collects pine needle baskets?
I recently saw an advertisement for covered match boxes. The price? Try $16 per box!
Couldn't believe my eyes! So I sat down and covered about 15 boxes for almost free.
I bought a bunch of the little boxes at Dollar Tree for $1 and I had all the trimmings.
These would be cute as place cards or accompanying a pretty gift candle.
Last but certainly not least. I "ran into" a flower weaving thingy at Hob Lob
a few weeks ago and couldn't resist. I found the pillow reduced awhile
back. Gathering purple yarns and beads, I dolled up the little gray
tucked pillow!
Why do you begin liking the color purple when you get older?

Until next time,

Until I Saw A Woman With No Legs...

This is a good morning for reflection.....

Last week as I waited for physical therapy (grumbling inside because I hurt),
a woman with no legs arrived for her therapy. Enough said.

As I thought an unkind thought about my husband because he didn't pick up the pillow that had fallen off the front porch rocker during a little wind, he called me to a delicious breakfast he had made.

As I re-visited some heated words my son and I had yesterday at the store,
he motioned for me to come to the back of the auction house
so he could load my purchases.

I have made a conscious choice to finally release my desire to have a perfect circle of friends and family, a formal dining room, a studio, a log cabin in the woods (or better the mountains), to be thin,
to be young again, have everything go my way....
In doing so,  I have to admit something I have learned....
life is too short to continually re-visit unpleasant events and unfulfilled dreams.

Dreams are ok, as long as they don't obscure the present and make you ungrateful.
My home, the physical house, is what it is. As of May 24, 2012, there will very probably no more chances for "add ons" or complete re-do's...so? Is my life any less blessed? Maybe a bigger, better house would be more comfortable, but hey, this one is paid for. It's in pretty good shape.

It's infinitely better to live in the moment and be grateful for an abundant life.
Always striving for more is exhausting, folks.

We must do the very best with what we have been graciously given.
If that means moving around pieces in and outside the house and inside your heart, to make something function better, or paint or repurpose what we have...great...but let's not waste another precious second crying over spilled milk.

Examples of "spilled" milk (aka: what might have been):
*It would be nice to be 5'6" tall and weigh 115 lbs...but it "ain't" happening, (unless when I DO have knee replacement, the doctor agrees to add a 5" dowel in each leg during the operation...and the 115? Haha.)

* It would be great to have a 4,000 sq ft home with every little detail "just right"...but then you'd have to dust all that space...hmmm, small is looking better.

*Wouldn't we all love a family where every member looks and acts like angels 100% of the time...
is it really necessary to go completely berserk about that tatoo, that long hair, those torn jeans?
(This one is hard for me..I must admit.)

So for all those out there who have all the things I used to long for...then, lucky fortunate you..
(I'm Presbyterian, we don't believe in luck).
For the rest of us, let's live the remaining years of  life trying to play the hand that has been dealt us in a cheerful, loving way...knowing that we won't always be successful, but at least we can give it our best shot.

Be thankful,

Copper Kettles

When my son was a toddler, he would not go to bed without being rocked. As we rocked away the hours (literally), he always had two special song requests. One he called, Copper Kettles (aka: My Favorite Things by Julie Andrews) and It's Not Easy Being Green by Kermit the Frog. To this day, whenever I hear either of those artists belting out those songs, I smile. I must have rocked a million miles.

Today was rainy and I was alone sitting in the den when I caught myself looking at various things in the room and smiling. (What a life! I suppose you are thinking.) But for the past few weeks I've been in a blue funk and stopping to "smell the roses" has always helped me return to a sunnier disposition. Certain "things" in my home are my favorites. I thought I'd share some of them with you.

My eye was caught by the light coming through the front window and cascading through my collection of paperweights.
My first paperweight was given to me by Mother...I keep it separate from the others.
Then there is my grandfather's marble collection...
My Mother's Day present (above) was a huge surprise. We had a glass piece like this in the shop and it sold before I remembered to buy it for myself...I was so disappointed, but my son and his wife remembered and when they spotted another one, they bought it for me.
My silver baby utensil collection and my salt spoons.
My mother in law's hand carved wooden crochet hooks in my pine needle pitcher.
Part of my pine needle basket collection...so pretty.
All things blue and bird-ie.
My two new mugs made by my lovely friend, Michelle Leach (Michelle Leach Art) who BTW is moving to Alabama this summer AND SHE IS ABOUT TO HAVE A SWEET BABY BOY!! Notice she carved Mississippi with a heart and GuGu (what my grandchildren call me) and Ryan's name (grandson). We have coffee every morning together in our new cups...also BTW she and her husband, Buster are moving to help plant a church...I feel like I am losing the daughter I never had.
A tiny tea pot...I love all things TINY!
Sweet old books....
Tiny china doll of my grandmother's in a cradle carved by my daddy when he was a boy.
Grandchildren, Ryan and Gracie....
Beautiful old embroidery...one of a pair.
My mother's secretary...
Grandson's award...
Then moving outdoors...my rainchain...a retirement gift from my friend Libby.
Maybe I will even have time to sit on the porch and enjoy it shortly.

Nothing fancy, or costly...just some of my favorite things from some of my favorite people.
Things that tie me to the ones I love.

It's not easy being green you know,
